Major expansion of community mental health support

On 5 August 2026 DHSC announced a Major expansion of community mental health support across England

£343 million plan will open 159 NHS mental health centres in England, giving people earlier local support and specialist crisis care outside A&E.

Regional Improvement Plan 2026-27

On 14 July 2026 SESLIP published our regional improvement plan for 2026-27

Headlines

The regional improvement plan has 43 projects and a budget of just over £2m.

The plan incorporates our delivery plan for DfE’s RIIA grant of £1.5m to SESLIP for financial year 2026-27.

Local authorities’ recoupment of the education costs of looked after children

On 6 July 2026 DfE published revised guidance on local authorities’ recoupment of the education costs of looked after children

Headlines

The revised recoupment regulations require the local authority responsible for looking after the child to pay the authority providing their education the amount that they agree.

Where the authorities cannot agree within 6 months, the costs specified must be recouped, which include home-to-school transport costs. See What the revised recoupment regulations mean for more information, including how the costs must be calculated.

The recoupment regulations do not cover looked after children receiving further education.

MoJ consultation: Oversight and funding of youth justice services

On 17 July 2026 Moj published Consultation on the oversight and funding of youth justice services

This consultation sets out proposals to create a more coherent approach to overseeing youth justice services, with clearer expectations, stronger partnership accountability and a more proportionate approach to reporting.

MoJ is also consulting on reforms to the way youth justice services are funded to ensure funding is allocated more fairly and reflects local need.
